Sustainability
We recognise that climate change and environmental degradation increase the risk from landslides. We are highly motivated to reduce any negative impact of our conference for the benefit of future generations.
Our goal is to deliver a conference that aligns with the Queenstown Lakes' Regenerative Tourism Plan (https://www.regenerativetourism.co.nz/) and will focus our efforts on the areas in which we have the most impact:
- Decarbonisation - We will actively pursue opportunities to minimise carbon emissions and to offset those that are unavoidable. Subject to sponsorship, we'll measure and minimise carbon emissions, and offset those we can't control. We'll select foods with lower embodied carbon, and cater carefully to avoid food waste. New Zealand's food production, particularly beef and lamb, is among the most carbon-efficient in the world.
- Waste - We will minimise waste by avoiding creating items that are not valued by our participants, and prioritise reusable options. We'll avoid single-use visuals, and prioritise digital signage and reusable materials, and we'll serve our food and drinks in reusable containers.
- Local, sustainable suppliers - We will work with local suppliers towards a regenerative and resilient local economy, including using local seasonal ingredients to minimise the impact of our food and drink options. Our venue (Millennium) is committed to a Science-Based Target to reduce absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 27% by 2030 from a 2017 base year.
- Community - We willfocus our workshop outcomes on delivering real resilience improvements for local communities and the world.
Please support our efforts to make this a truely sustainable conference. Here are some ideas you may be able to use:
- Bring your own reusable water bottle.
- Offset carbon emissions from any flights you take to get here, and try to choose low-carbon options. Google search gives you an estimate of the carbon emissions of each flight, so you can pick ones with better efficiency.
- Bring old lanyards back. If you've got a lanyard from a previous conference, use it again here.
We are working with our sponsors to increase the sustainability of all our packages, including specific sustainability focused sponsorship opportunities.
Please contact us if you would like to get involved in our sustainability activities.
